Report by Police Group Exposes ACLU Study on TASER's as 'Junk Science'

ACLU Study Based on False Premise and Dangerous Recommendations

Springfield, VA - The Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) today released a report debunking a recent ACLU of Northern California ‘study’ that attacks police use of electronic control devices, particularly those manufactured by TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq: TASR, TASRE). The LEAA report exposes the junk science behind the ACLU ‘study’, uncovering how the ACLU exaggerates and advances anti-TASER propaganda by nearly ten-fold and attacks police use of force without credible evidence.

The ACLU TASER ‘study’, is a virtual repeat of decades old ACLU attacks on other law enforcement less lethal tools, such as pepper spray or batons. The so-called ‘study’ reviews limited accounts of drug-induced suspects involved in violent confrontations with police officers, where the suspects later died. Over a decade ago, such in custody deaths were blamed on pepper spray, now the ACLU has a new target police use of TASERs.

LEAA Executive Director and retired police officer, James J. Fotis said, “The ACLU hit piece on cops and TASERs is nothing more than a recycled version of their anti-cop rhetoric about pepper spray. Their wild claims went unchallenged ten years ago, but our report will set the record straight.”

LEAA will be warning the law enforcement community about the dangers associated with the recommendations of the ACLU ‘study’. The politicization of law enforcement tactics, policy, and procedures would undoubtedly result in ill-conceived policies that place officers’ lives at risk.

The Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) is a leader in educating the public, media and government decision makers about officer safety issues. LEAA backed officer safety legislation has been signed into law at the federal and state level. LEAA Spokesmen are frequent news contributors on issues from police use of force, officer safety and a variety of criminal justice topics.
