California Legislature Passes Handgun Ban Disguised as 'Safety' Measure.
Your action is immediately needed to block a massive handgun ban, recently passed by the California Legislature. SB 489 would ban the new sale of the majority of handguns on the market, including nearly every sidearm in common law enforcement and self defense use.
The bill seeks to require all handguns to be equipped with magazine disconnects and chamber indicators. Any gun not so equipped will be defined in California law as an 'unsafe handgun' and therefore will be illegal to sell in California.
Such legislation will impact law abiding gun owners and rank and law enforcement agencies. Millions of Californians will face a massive new gun ban and California law enforcement agencies will be susceptible to lawsuits from issuing their officers guns deemed 'unsafe' by state law.
SB 489 has passed both houses of the California legislature and awaits the signature of Governor Gray Davis Concerned Californians can contact Governor Gray Davis to share their opposition to this thinly veiled handgun ban.

- If passed SB 489 would declare nearly every sidearm used by California law enforcement officers an “unsafe handgun.” - It doesn’t take a law degree to know that greedy trial lawyers will pounce on this in any court action involving the use of an officer’s firearm.
- SB 489 requires guns to be equipped with features contrary to the basic principles of firearms safety even the anti-gun organization, Americans for Gun Safety, in their publication Universal Firearm Safety Rules, cautions people to “never rely on a mechanical safety.”
- SB 489 does nothing to promote the most important element of firearms safety education. Any law addressing firearms safety must include funding for education and safety training.
